39. Self-Directed Learning Is The Future Of Education

For the longest time, education has always been inside the four corners of a classroom. But as we continue to evolve and uncertainties happen, people have learned to be creative, flexible, and adapt. 38. The 100-Day Onboarding Experience

Onboarding is the process of integrating new hires into an organization or company. For some, that only takes one day of orientation, however as the pandemic emerged, many companies have become creative and found ways to transition effectively to a remote-first setup, including the onboarding process of new hires. One of them is Cimpress.

Today, we have invited Brittany Sohns. She is the manager of Remote Onboarding and Learning & Development at Cimpress. A manufacturing company that was a remote adverse company in the past but has successfully transitioned from office-centric culture to a remote-first culture.

In this episode, Brittany shares how she strives to create the best work experience through developing their own 100-day remote onboarding experience.

In this episode:

[01:10] How Cimpress transitioned from an office-centric company to remote-first culture during the pandemic.

[02:34] With overwhelming positive team member feedback they decided to transition to permanent remote-first working. 

[03:27] At Cimpress, remote work means working in a home office or any location and not physical office space. 

[04:08] Cimpress has collaboration centers across the globe where its employees can gather and work together if they want to.

[05:57] Before going remote-first, Cimpress employees from across the States and the globe were already using communication and collaboration tools that allowed them to work together, which they still use now with other new tools.

[06:40] Some of the tools they’ve implemented are Miro for collaboration and launching 360 learning for content learning.

[07:38] To enable a better remote-first experience for the employees, they created a cross-functional project team and made remote-first the strength of their culture and become a competitive advantage.

[08:43] Aside from implementing a remote-first handbook, they also created a remote-first team member success team. A team that focuses on onboarding, learning and development, communication and collaboration, and knowledge management.

[10:12] Cimpress implemented a 100-day program for remote onboarding which is an upgrade from a single day of orientation sessions and aim for a world-class onboarding program.

[11:06] How the 100-day onboarding program works. 

[12:30] To bring a sense of connection and belonging, new team members are grouped into cohorts according to their start date.

[15:46] They provide an onboarding program checklist that outlines all of the company tasks that need to be completed in their first 100 days at the company. 

[16:32] Also, each manager or team creates a role-specific onboarding plan.

[17:20]  Some of the initial difficulties was the adjustment of transitioning from 1-2 days to a longer onboarding period.

[18:32] The biggest adjustment they had to through was working remotely was new for all of them.

[20:24] For Brittany, she aims to continue optimizing and enhancing the current program based on metrics and team member feedback.

[21:44] Sometimes people forget how important onboarding is. It reduces turnover, increases engagement, increases job satisfaction, and the education of why onboarding is important. 

[24:24] One of the gaps they experienced was in the role-specific onboarding plan for new hires. Managers were given the freedom to create and decide the framework but found out they need guidance. 

[27:49] Other programs implemented for remote-work work experience are their learning management system, Udemy for business, 360 Learning, Remote First Champion Collective, and hiring a team member who focuses on knowledge management.

37. The Unmuted Framework with Heather Hansen

It's a fact that good communication skills are essential in today's remote workplace. People tend to work better when they can understand each other. But what does that mean, really? It's easy to throw around buzzwords and phrases like "communication skills" and "interpersonal skills." But in reality, being a great communicator boils down to one simple thing: showing empathy. This is especially true when it comes to working with remote teams. 

In this episode, I’m joined by Heather Hansen, a global communication specialist, TEDx speaker, and author of the book, Unmuted: How to Show Up, Speak Up, and Inspire Action. She’s the founder of Global Speech Academy, whose mission is to empower global voices to contribute to conversations that matter in business, politics, and life.

In our conversation, Heather shares how we can create a more inclusive workplace by encouraging people to speak up, the Unmuted Framework, and strategies to effectively communicate with confidence and clarity.

38. The 100-Day Onboarding Experience

Onboarding is the process of integrating new hires into an organization or company. For some, that only takes one day of orientation, however as the pandemic emerged, many companies have become creative and found ways to transition effectively to a remote-first setup, including the onboarding process of new hires. One of them is Cimpress.

Today, we have invited Brittany Sohns. She is the manager of Remote Onboarding and Learning & Development at Cimpress. A manufacturing company that was a remote adverse company in the past but has successfully transitioned from office-centric culture to a remote-first culture.

In this episode, Brittany shares how she strives to create the best work experience through developing their own 100-day remote onboarding experience.

In this episode:

[01:10] How Cimpress transitioned from an office-centric company to remote-first culture during the pandemic.

[02:34] With overwhelming positive team member feedback they decided to transition to permanent remote-first working. 

[03:27] At Cimpress, remote work means working in a home office or any location and not physical office space. 

[04:08] Cimpress has collaboration centers across the globe where its employees can gather and work together if they want to.

[05:57] Before going remote-first, Cimpress employees from across the States and the globe were already using communication and collaboration tools that allowed them to work together, which they still use now with other new tools.

[06:40] Some of the tools they’ve implemented are Miro for collaboration and launching 360 learning for content learning.

[07:38] To enable a better remote-first experience for the employees, they created a cross-functional project team and made remote-first the strength of their culture and become a competitive advantage.

[08:43] Aside from implementing a remote-first handbook, they also created a remote-first team member success team. A team that focuses on onboarding, learning and development, communication and collaboration, and knowledge management.

[10:12] Cimpress implemented a 100-day program for remote onboarding which is an upgrade from a single day of orientation sessions and aim for a world-class onboarding program.

[11:06] How the 100-day onboarding program works. 

[12:30] To bring a sense of connection and belonging, new team members are grouped into cohorts according to their start date.

[15:46] They provide an onboarding program checklist that outlines all of the company tasks that need to be completed in their first 100 days at the company. 

[16:32] Also, each manager or team creates a role-specific onboarding plan.

[17:20]  Some of the initial difficulties was the adjustment of transitioning from 1-2 days to a longer onboarding period.

[18:32] The biggest adjustment they had to through was working remotely was new for all of them.

[20:24] For Brittany, she aims to continue optimizing and enhancing the current program based on metrics and team member feedback.

[21:44] Sometimes people forget how important onboarding is. It reduces turnover, increases engagement, increases job satisfaction, and the education of why onboarding is important. 

[24:24] One of the gaps they experienced was in the role-specific onboarding plan for new hires. Managers were given the freedom to create and decide the framework but found out they need guidance. 

[27:49] Other programs implemented for remote-work work experience are their learning management system, Udemy for business, 360 Learning, Remote First Champion Collective, and hiring a team member who focuses on knowledge management.

37. The Unmuted Framework with Heather Hansen

It's a fact that good communication skills are essential in today's remote workplace. People tend to work better when they can understand each other. But what does that mean, really? It's easy to throw around buzzwords and phrases like "communication skills" and "interpersonal skills." But in reality, being a great communicator boils down to one simple thing: showing empathy. This is especially true when it comes to working with remote teams. 

In this episode, I’m joined by Heather Hansen, a global communication specialist, TEDx speaker, and author of the book, Unmuted: How to Show Up, Speak Up, and Inspire Action. She’s the founder of Global Speech Academy, whose mission is to empower global voices to contribute to conversations that matter in business, politics, and life.

In our conversation, Heather shares how we can create a more inclusive workplace by encouraging people to speak up, the Unmuted Framework, and strategies to effectively communicate with confidence and clarity.

[8:45] Recognizing our own biases is the first step in fostering a welcoming attitude toward non-native English speakers and promoting inclusivity in the workplace.

[13:58] Providing meeting participants with an agenda beforehand equalizes the playing ground for all participants even if they have varying levels of English proficiency.

[23:48] How remote working arrangements have helped many people to communicate and form relationships with people from different locations.

[27:11] Adaptability is a key leadership skill that will allow us to create a workplace that values all people regardless of race, culture, and language, leading to a more inclusive world.

[28:23] Leaders must be purpose-driven. They must have a clear sense of purpose, values, and goals. They must be willing to speak out about issues that are important to them in order to inspire others and lead their companies from a position of social responsibility.

[30:30] As more people work remotely, leaders must develop a digital brand that extends beyond the physical confines of the company to the online world.

Hey everyone. So this is a quick bonus episode to thank you for taking part in the remote first podcast for this first season, it's been an incredible experience and I am going to be telling you a bit more about what's coming. For the season one, we've had amazing guests. It's been an awesome time to listen to other leaders who add experience in a remote first workplace.

We've had guests from Shopify, Prezi, Radical Candor. We had people from Doist also from Oyster HR. It's been a really interesting, I loved to have all this conversation with everyone. We talked about remote leadership. We talked about hiring compliance, the limits of asynchronous communication and keeping your team engaged in a remote workplace.

I hope that like me, you really appreciated the content and the interviews and discussions we had with the leaders. It's been really fun for me as well to discover also the world of podcasting. So I hope you also liked the experience, I'm taking a little break for the month of May to prepare the lineup that will be launched on May 31st.

So on May 31st, I'm launching season 2 where we will be having amazing other guests again, but this time I'm so excited, because we have guests coming from larger companies. This time, we will talk a lot about distributed-by-design at scale. So this is very exciting and I hope that you'll be joining us.

Now that you might be redesigning your values to reflect the change you are living in the workplace, use them as a conductor of your orchestra. In a remote and hybrid setting, with the lack of face to face, it is especially important to take the time to think about the way we work and keep each-other accountable. I am so happy to have today Siobhan Mckeown, who is the VP People and Culture at Human Made. She is also the author of the book A life lived remotely and have been involved for years in the WordPress open-source community.
